An illustration of the Stitchbird (Notiomystis cincta) for Tirtiri Matangi wildlife sanctuary, New Zealand.
I was asked to create an illustration to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the re-introduction of the rare Stitchbird to the widlife sanctuary. It was important to create a design that balances both visual appeal and scientific accuracy. I drew the stitchbird sitting on a branch of New Zealand Gloxinia (Rhabdothamnus solandri), which is a threatened plant that has a symbiotic relationship with the stitchbird, who pollinates it’s flowers. The design was printed on a t-shirt, and sold to raise funds for the sanctuary.
